SAINT JOHN SCRATCHES
Aiden Kelly was a healthy scratch.

Stephen MacAulay missed the game because of the death of his grandmother but was seen in a suit on the bench during warm-ups. He missed last weekend’s game in Moncton due to an upper body injury.

Nathan Beaulieu missed his second straight game with an ankle injury.

OUTPLAYED
The score was close, but this game was all Cape Breton.

"We were confident,'' Luke Adam said about his club's mindset after 40 minutes to the Telegraph-Journal. "We felt like we were outplaying them and we just wanted to keep going.''

Despite leading 2-1 after one period, the Sea Dogs were being outshot 14-7. Saint John didn’t record a shot until they beat Olivier Roy at 7:11. When that goal happened, the Eagles were outshooting the Sea Dogs 8-0. The Dogs’ second goal was their fourth shot on goal.

"We could have been a lot better,'' Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant said. "We didn't play our game. They pretty well controlled the game most of the night. We had a couple of good spurts, but it was just a game where the boys didn't show up to play.”

After a scoreless second in which the Sea Dogs outshot Cape Breton, the Eagles continued to not let up at all in the third. They scored three straight goals to take the game 4-2.

ST. LAURENT – SOLID
It was a good bounce back game from goaltender Karel St. Laurent. The 19-year old net minder got the call in net after Marco Cousineau started in three straight games including Friday’s 3-2 win at Harbour Station.

He was very sharp in net and made some great saves all game long. He kept his play simple, something that he has struggled with this season. He also managed to stay in the crease for the most of the game and not make stupid plays with the puck.

He stopped 32 of 35 shots while picking only his fourth loss of the season.

GALIEV – NOT SO SOLID
The QMJHL’s leader in rookie scoring had a rough outing on Sunday afternoon.

The Russian was held pointless and had a -3 rating. Galiev had a point per game average entering the contest and is the rookie leader in +/-.

He went hard into the boards in the first period after being stopped on a partial breakaway. A good indication of his struggles could be seen when Gerard Gallant replaced Galiev with tough guy Will Johnston on the top line with Nicholas Petersen and Mike Hoffman.

"Some of the guys weren't as focused and mentally prepared as they have been,” said Gallant. “You have to take the good out of this, but you hate to give away points at home when you're coming down the stretch.''

ROY SETS EAGLE RECORD
Olivier Roy, with his win yesterday, has tied the franchise record for most wins by a goaltender, in his career, in the history of the franchise (Sorel – Verdun – Granby – Cape Breton). The record was previously established by Claude Legris (87 wins with Sorel).

Roy stopped 32 of 34 shots in his first win against Saint John this year.

OUT OF TOWN
Elsewhere in the QMJHL it was Victoriaville 7 Chicoutimi 1; Rimouski 2 Halifax 1; Lewiston 4 Quebec 2 and Rouyn-Noranda 4 Montreal 3.

PEEWEE DOGS DROP OPENER
TELEGRAPH-JOURNAL
QUEBEC CITY, Que. - The Saint John Peewee AAA Sea Dogs, representing their QMJHL partners, dropped their opening game in the prestigious Quebec International Peewee Hockey Tournament Saturday. The Sea Dogs suffered a 3-0 setback to the Columbus Peewee Blue Jackets in division B action. In exhibition play, Saint John was edged 4-3 in a shoot-out by the Atlanta Peewee Fire.
