PRE-GAME: Halifax Mooseheads vs Saint John Sea Dogs

Game Day
Halifax Mooseheads vs Saint John Sea Dogs

Sunday, March 7, 2010 at 4:00 pm
Harbour Station

Visiting Team: Halifax Mooseheads
Record: 13-45-2-4 (6th in Atlantic Division)
Last Game: 8-1 loss at Bathurst on Friday
Leading Scorer: Tomas Knotek: 57 GP-26 G-27 A-53 Pts
NHL Draft Picks: Peter Delmas (Colorado)
Notes: The Mooseheads sit last in the Atlantic division and last overall in the entire QMJHL. They have already been eliminated from playoff contention… Halifax was destroyed by the Acadie-Bathurst Titan 9-1 on Friday at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre. "We’ve got some guys that are playing hard and some guys that are competing for the draft and a spot on the team next year but others have got to find a reason to start playing hard again," said Mooseheads head coach and general manager Cam Russell. "Some guys aren’t playing as hard as they should be.”… 1-8-1-0 in their last 10 games and are currently on a nine game losing skid. Earlier this season, the Moose had a 12 game losing streak. The longest belongs to Lewiston who lost 15 straight… during their nine game losing streak, they have picked up only one point and have been outscored 48-21… why the Herd are in last - they can’t score. They have scored a league worst 161 goals this season in 64 games. That is an average of only 2.5 goals per game while Saint John is averaging 4.6… a league worst 3-26-0-1 on the road this season with one of those wins going down at Harbour Station in December. They are 1-9-0-0 in their last 10 road games and have lost seven straight… the Mooseheads will end the season on the road due to the Brier taking over the Metro Centre. This is game two of a five game road venture… Garrett Clarke (bruised knee) and Dylan McGuigan (concussion) are day-to-day… former Sea Dog Matthew Stoddard was a healthy scratch Friday… Carl Gelinas, who will not play this afternoon, has scored a team high three goals against the Sea Dogs this year… Alex Lemieux has 13 penalty minutes against Saint John… Linden Bahm is a team worst -8 against the Dogs… Halifax has played Saint John very tough this season and is 1-5-0-1 against them.

The Halifax Mooseheads will be without rookie left-winger Carl Gelinas for the rest of the QMJHL season. Gelinas, who is fourth in team scoring with 14 goals among 30 points in 56 games and was named the team’s rookie of the year, has a sprained and hasn’t played Feb. 13.

According to John Moore of News 95.7 in Halifax, the Mooseheads will be riding a different bus than usual. From Twitter:

“High winds pushing bus around as we head to Bathurst. Team bus unable to make it to Hfx so we are on older bus. Gelinas is out for season.

“Our team bus was pulled out of PEI ditch this am. Only uninjured driver was aboard trying to get to Hfx for our trip. No serious damage.”

Home Team: Saint John Sea Dogs
Record: 51-11-1-1 (1st in Atlantic Division)
Last Game: 4-3 shootout loss vs Moncton on Friday
Leading Scorer: Mike Hoffman: 53 GP-44 G-37 A-81 Pts
NHL Draft Picks: Yann Sauve (Vancouver), Marco Cousineau (Anaheim), Simon Despres (Pittsburgh), Steven Anthony (Vancouver), Mike Hoffman (Ottawa), and Nicholas Petersen (Pittsburgh).
Notes: Saint John is first in the Atlantic, first overall in the QMJHL, and are ranked second in country for the second straight week… Saint John is coming off a 4-3 shootout loss to the Moncton Wildcats on Friday at Harbour Station. The Sea Dogs played very well but blew an early 2-0 lead. It was the team’s first shootout loss of the season… Marco Cousineau has started the last two games, meaning Karel St. Laurent will likely get the start in goal this afternoon. St. Laurent is 17-4 this season and is coming off a shootout win last Saturday in Rouyn-Noranda. The goalie has played against Halifax twice this season and has a record of 2-0 with a goals against average of 2.42 and a save percentage of 0.896… Saint John could reach the 300 goal mark today if they can light the Mooseheads up for five goals. They lead the league with 295 goals scored in 64 games played… the Dogs’ penalty kill has slipped down to 11th in the 18-team circuit with a rating of 78.6%. They allowed two extra man goals against the Wildcats on Friday night with both shots coming from the point… Saint John has now lost two straight games for only the third time all season. They have not lost more than two straight all year… 6-3-0-1 in their last 10 games… the Dogs have a hard time at home of late and have a record of 25-7-0-1 at Harbour Station. They are 6-3-0-1 in their last 10 home games and have lost two straight… this is the final regular season game for the Sea Dogs in Saint John. They have three road games next week… Nicholas Petersen sits third in team scoring behind Michael Kirkpatrick and Mike Hoffman. He has used a balanced attack however, and has 37 goals and 37 assists this year in 55 games… Petersen has scored a team high six goals and nine points against the Moose this season… Zach Phillips, who had the game tying goal on Friday night, has a team high seven assists in seven games against the Herd… no Sea Dog player has a minus rating versus Halifax while Pierre Durepos is a team best +9…

One more point will be enough to secure the Sea Dogs the 2009-10 Jean Rougeau Trophy as the QMJHL’s regular season champions, an achievement which affords the club home ice throughout the playoffs. Five of the past six Jean Rougeau Trophy winners have gone on to capture the President’s Cup and represent the Q at the MasterCard Memorial Cup Tournament.
