MAYER LEADING CYCLONES THROUGH FINAL

Robert Mayer is leaving his impression on the East Coast Hockey League.

The former Saint John Sea Dogs goaltender stopped all 18 shots he faced last night as the Cincinnati Cyclones defeated Idaho Steelheads 1-0 to take a 2-0 series in the Kelly Cup Final.

“Our team defense was unbelievable,” Mayer said to Cincinnati.com after the game. “Everyone sticks to the system. Everybody knows what to do and that’s why we keep winning.”

For Mayer, it was his third shutout of the post-season. He also boasts the ECHL’s best playoff goals against average of 1.46.

The Cyclones, the double-A affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens, are 8-1 in the post-season in one goal games. Their past three games have all been decided by a single marker.

The best-of-seven series now returns to Boise for game three on Tuesday at 8:30 pm AST.

The fact that the Cyclones are even in the Final is a miracle in itself. Down 3-0 in their semi-final series against the Reading Royals, Cincinnati climbed all the back to win the series in seven games. It was only the sixth time in pro-hockey history that the feat had been accomplished until the Boston Bruins collapsed last week.

Mayer spent two years in Saint John after being selected third overall in the 2008 CHL Import Draft. The Swiss native collected a record of 42-39 in his time with the Sea Dogs. Mayer became the first player in franchise history to be called up to the National Hockey League in February when he was issued to Montreal to fill in as a practice goalie during the Olympic break.

He was signed by the Canadiens in the fall of 2008 following a free agent tryout with club.
