MIDDLE FRAME EXPLOSION GIVES DOGS WIN OVER HERD

SN RECAP
FINAL: Mooseheads 2, Sea Dogs 5

SAINT JOHN – A four goal explosion in the second period lead the Saint John Sea Dogs to a 5-2 victory over the Halifax Mooseheads in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action on Saturday night at Harbour Station.

Gabriel Bourret, Zach Phillips, Jonathan Huberdeau, Ryan Tesink, and Michael Kirkpatrick all scored for the winners, who improved to a perfect 3-0 to start the 2010-11 campaign.

"We did a good job of capitalizing on our chances and (starting goaltender Karel) St. Laurent made some big saves for us,” said Sea Dogs defenseman Kevin Gagne after the game to the teams official Twitter page.

St. Laurent made 31 saves to pick up his second win of the season. He hadn’t played since last Friday.

Travis Randell and Brent Andrews scored for Halifax. Rookie backstop Anthony Terenzio stopped 22 pucks in the loss. Halifax fell to 1-3-0-0 on the season.

After a slow back-and-forth first few minutes, Christian Morin almost found the score sheet but ripped his slap shot high and wide of the net.

Ryan Tesink headed off to serve two minutes in the penalty box at 9:35. The Sea Dogs would produce a solid penalty kill, with the only Moosehead chance coming when Garrett Clarke was denied by St. Laurent’s glove.

Jonathan Huberdeau worked the puck in the crease after the penalty expired. The puck squirted to the side of the net where Michael Kirkpatrick dove to try and hammer the disc in but couldn’t. Then, Scott Oke let a good backhand shot go that was stopped by the pad of Terenzio.

Halifax came back the other the way following the Sea Dogs’ rush, producing some pressure in the Saint John zone.

Shots in the first frame were 7-5 for the visitors.

With Kevin Gagne in the sin bin for checking from behind at 1:07, Huberdeau fed Kirkpatrick on a shorthanded two-on-one opportunity but was denied by Terenzio. The Herd would work the power play well, though, with Matthew Boudreau firing a shot off the post.

When the power play ended for Halifax, Simon Desmarais ripped a blast off the crossbar.

The Terenzio show continued when Kirkpatrick had a wide open cage. But a diving effort at the side of the crease but the Moose stopper kept the puck out.

But then the roof caved in for the Mooseheads. It began at 9:47 when Gabriel Bourret wired a shot from the point that went through an significant amount of traffic and between the legs of Terenzio to make it a 1-0 Saint John lead.

Just over a minute later 10:57, Clarke produced a colossal turnover at the Mooseheads blue line. That created a three-on-none opportunity for the Sea Dogs. Zach Phillips chose to keep the puck and wristed a shot top shelf to double Saint John’s lead.

It would become 3-0 at 11:40 on the power play. While the penalty was being introduced, Huberdeau jammed the puck by Terenzio at the side of the net to make it a 3-0 Sea Dogs advantage.

Not too long after at 16:16, Ryan Tesink beat the Mooseheads net minder point blank with a wrist shot to give the home side a commanding 4-0 lead.

At 19:22, Guillaume Cloutier was called for hooking and it would prove to be costly in the third period.

Shots in the middle stanza were 11 apiece.

Huberdeau opened up the final period of play with a partial breakaway while his team was shorthanded but was stopped by the Herd’s goaltender.

When play came back the either way, Travis Randell beat St. Laurent through the five-hole to make it a 4-1 game with lots of time remaining.

Halifax would make it interesting at 2:38. St. Laurent made the initial stop but let out a huge rebound. The puck made its way to the side of the goal where Brent Andrews scored to make it a 4-2 game. For Andrews, it was his fifth goal in his past two games after scoring four in Bathurst on Friday.

Phillips had a good burst of speed halfway through the period but was stopped by the leather of Terenzio.

Pierre Durepos headed off at 11:31 for interference. The Sea Dogs would be successful in killing off the penalty and would keep the Mooseheads’ surge at a minimum.

Saint John would seal the deal at 17:55 when Kirkpatrick broke in on a breakaway and beat Terenzio with a quick snap shot into the corner to make it a 5-2 final.

Shots in the third were 15-11 for the Moose.

Saint John went 1/1 on the power play while Halifax was 1/4.
