SAINT JOHN SCRATCHES
Simon Despres is still competing at Pittsburgh Penguins training camp and was once again a scratch for the Sea Dogs. Mike Thomas is also still away at Oklahoma City Barons training camp.

With Stephen MacAulay returning from St. Louis Blues camp earlier in the week, Tyrone Sock was the odd man out for Saint John last evening.

DOGS ESCAPE HALIFAX WITH EXTRA POINT
It wasn’t exactly the game Saint John Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant wanted, but he’ll surely take the extra point.

The Dogs were once again caught not playing a full 60 minute game. They got down early, but battled back to defeat the Mooseheads 4-3 in a shootout at the Metro Centre last evening.

"I'm not a guy who wants our kids fighting a lot,'' Gallant said to the Telegraph-Journal. "But it's disappointing when you don't see enough emotion from some of your key players.

"There's lots of hockey left, but it's disappointing to watch some of our players right now,” the coach added. “There's no mojo right now with our team and hopefully it will come around soon.''

Carl Gelinas struck on the power play just over four minutes into the game to put the Moose up a goal. Exactly three minutes later, import sensation Martin Frk put the Herd up a pair with a hard shot down low that beat Karel St. Laurent upstairs.

But Stephen MacAulay got the Dogs on the board at 10:51 to give Halifax a 2-1 lead after one.

In the second, Halifax native Steven Anthony beat Mathieu Corbeil to tie the affair at 2-2. But the Mooseheads would reply with Gelinas adding his second of the game at 7:10 to make it a 3-2 lead for the home side.

In the third, Jonathan Huberdeau tied the game and sent it to extra time. Zach Phillips almost ended the game just moments into overtime but he rang a shot off the inside of the post.

So to a shootout the two teams went. Tomas Jurco and Frk both scored for their respective teams in round one and Huberdeau won the game with his trademark “Huberian” move to the forehand in round two.

"We put the puck down low more in the third period and that's what we have to do,” said Huberdeau to the T-J. “It's tougher for the other team when you put the puck down low.''

STREAKING
With the win, Saint John ended their two game slid. The Sea Dogs dropped a pair of games last weekend in Quebec. The team is now 2-1-0-1 on their five game road stretch.

For Halifax, it was their fourth consecutive loss after losing three straight last week in Quebec. The Mooseheads are still without a win at home this season.

Q SITE FAIL
The new QMJHL website continues to fail. No penalties in the game were record, meaning Halifax, who scored a power play goal, is listed as going 1/0 on the man advantage.

Also strangely missing from the score sheet are the officials who called the game, the three stars, and the end time of the game.

HANGING IN THERE
Despite Halifax being in the basement over the past two years, they have always given the Sea Dogs fits.Last nights game was no exception.

"We didn’t win the game but we got one point so that helps," said the very impressive Mooseheads defenceman Simon Desmarais to the Chronicle Herald. "It’s the first game we played (all) three periods. We played hard, we played physical, we had some good fights and we had some good shots on net. So we had some opportunities to win."

“We had the lead and we found a way to lose, but we have a lot of young players and throughout the year I’m sure we’ll be better with that and keep the leads,” said Carl Gelinas to Metro Halifax. “I think it’s going to be better every day.”

KISS CAM
Whoever runs the kiss cam at the Halifax Metro Centre thought they were pretty clever last night. The camera showed the on-ice officials huddled in a circle as well as two players sitting on the Saint John bench.

They have another weird promo on the video board in Halifax where fans are asked to pull out their BMO Bank of Montreal bank cards and wave them around.

NO KONRAD
Mooseheads defenseman Konrad Abeltshauser was not expected to play for the Herd last due to a knee injury. The import took warm-up, but did not dress for the game.

Also out for the Mooseheads, according to Metro Halifax, were Sawyer Hannay (suspended), Matthew Boudreau (healthy), and Alex Souligny (healthy).

FRK SHOW
Following Martin Frk’s shootout goal, the Czech born forward skated back to the Halifax bench with his hand up to his hear – a big no-no in the world of hockey gentlemen. According to Willy Palov in the Herald, Frk also pumped his jersey.

Noting resulted from his actions, but a great tweet came out of it from @SJSeaDogsFan: “he was just trying to buy a vowel.”

Jonathan Huberdeau got some revenge by using the ole' jersey pump as he skated by the Mooseheads bench after scoring.

HUBERDEAU GOAL
Here is what Jonathan Huberdeau’s shootout move looked like last night.

This is a shootout goal he scored last year against Moncton:

OUT OF TOWN
From The Canadian Press:

Elsewhere in the QMJHL it was Quebec 8 Cape Breton 2, Gatineau 3 Drummondville 0, P.E.I. 4 Baie-Comeau 2, Montreal 3 Chicoutimi 1, Rimouski 4 Acadie-Bathurst 3 and Lewiston 8 Rouyn-Noranda 0.

With the Drummondville Voltigeurs falling to the Gatineau Olympiques, there is no longer an undefeated team in the QMJHL.

In PEI, the Charlottetown Civic Centre, not surprisingly, went into fog mode. Here are some pictures from our Twitter friend Jeff.

QUICK HITS
Steven Anthony has now scored in all three games he has played in this season since returning from Vancouver Canucks camp… there was a delay to start the game and a delay to start the second period. It’s not clear why… with all the hype around Jurco and his now famous shootout skills, you’d think Jurco would try to top his previous moves. But he didn’t, as the Slovakian beat goaltender Mathieu Corbeil with a rather simple deke to the forehand… Martin Frk only had one shot on goal… Michael Kirkpatrick and Gabriel Bourret were both a team worst -2. Kirkpatrick had some bad luck in this one, missing a wide open net after Stanislav Galiev hit the post in the third period… there were two fights in the game: Stephen MacAulay vs Garrett Clarke and Christian Morin vs Charles Bety. Clarke won the first fight while the second was a draw… to relive the game, check on the SN Live Blog Replay... the Mooseheads brought back their black jersey's last night... the Sea Dogs are 1-0-0-0 in the David Alward Conservative era.
