MOOSE LOOKING TO AVOID DOGS

The Halifax Mooseheads are hoping to avoid playing the Saint John Sea Dogs in the opening round of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoffs.

With a 4-3 shootout loss against the Prince Edward Island Rocket last night, the Mooseheads moved three points up on the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles for the 15th spot in the QMJHL standings. Whoever finishes 16th overall will be forced to play the top-ranked team in the Canadian Hockey League - the Sea Dogs.

In today’s Metro Halifax, Mooseheads import defenseman Konrad Abeltshauser explains that his team would feel much more comfortable finishing 15th overall.

“We think we have the strength to upset Montreal,” said Mooseheads defenceman Konrad Abeltshauser, the second star with a goal and an assist.

“A team like Saint John, with offence like (theirs) and the (depth) of their roster, would make it really hard against them. We obviously (want to) try to avoid Saint John and pull off an upset against Montreal.”
The Montreal Juniors currently sit second in the league with 95 points but the Quebec Remparts are knocking on the door and sit just one point back of the Juniors. Montreal has a game-on-hand over the Remparts.

The Juniors have been struggling a bit of late and are 6-2-0-2 in their last 10 games and are winless in their past two games.

No matter who the Mooseheads play, an upset will be extremely difficult. The Sea Dogs, Juniors, and Remparts are all in the BMO CHL MasterCard Top 10 Rankings and all have an above .730 winning percentages.
