ICE ADVANCE TO MEMORIAL CUP

The Kootenay Ice have advanced to the MasterCard Memorial Cup following a 4-1 series clinching victory against the Portland Winterhawks last night. The Ice won the Ed Chynoweth Cup in five games over the Winterhawks.

Matt Fraser scored twice for the winners while Steele Boomer added a single marker. Jesse Ismond netted an empty netter in the final minute. Goaltender Nathan Lieuwen made 26 saves in goal.

Portland’s only goal came from Tyler Wotherspoon. Mac Carruth allowed three goals on 39 shots.

The Ice lost just three games in their playoff run. They dropped one game in the Western Hockey League final and two in the first round to the Moose Jaw Warriors. One of their most surprising feats came in the second round when they swept the Saskatoon Blades. The Blades finished the regular season ranked No. 2 in the Canadian Hockey League behind Saint John.

Kootenay finished the regular season with a record of 46-21-1-4, finishing fourth in the Eastern Conference.

The WHL champs will join the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors and Owen Sound Attack at the Memorial Cup. The winner of the Saint John – Gatineau series will be the last to join the party.

Game Seven of the Ontario Hockey League final is tomorrow at 3:00 pm in Mississauga.
