POSTSCRIPT: Sea Dogs 4, Olympiques 3 (2OT)

(Note: This was going to be posted last night but Blogger was being a joke all evening.)

SAINT JOHN SCRATCHES
Saint John defenseman Jason Seed was once again a healthy scratch. Recent call-ups Spencer MacDonald, Devon Oliver-Dares, and Jacob Edwards were also out of the lineup.

Forward Michael Kirkpatrick missed his fourth straight game with an upper-body injury. Steven Anthony missed his third straight contest with a lower body injury.

THE GOAL
Ryan Tesink scored the biggest goal in Sea Dogs franchise history, netting the game winner with 44 seconds remaining in the second overtime.

From the Ottawa Citizen:

“It’s the biggest goal I’ve scored in my life. That’s pretty much all I can say about it,” said Tesink, who chipped the puck away from Olympiques defenceman Nicolas Deslauriers then drove the net as Stanislav Galiev sent the puck on goal where Tesink redirected it in.

From the Canadian Press:

“That’s the most tired I’ve ever been and I did not want to go into a third overtime, so we said we had to finish it and we got lucky,” said Tesink, who beat Olympiques goaltender Maxime Clermont on the Sea Dogs' 64th shot of the night after being set up in front by Stanislav Galiev. “It’s a great feeling, but it’s not over yet, though. (Gatineau) doesn’t quit.”

“Deslauriers had the puck and I took a chance and tried to strip him,” Tesink said. “Me and Galiev had a 2-on-1 and he made a great saucer pass to me and I just jammed it in. It was just a blue-collar goal.”

From Yahoo! Sports:

"Coach tapped us on the shoulder and said, 'you go out and end it now' and we ended up doing it," Tesink, a rookie and native Saint Johner, said. "Deslauriers was coming up the middle and I took a chance and tried to strip him and ended up being successful, my linemate Galiev got the pass out front and I jammed it in."

LONGEST GAME EVER
This was the longest game in the history of the President’s Cup finals. From the Sea Dogs website:

The previous longest finals game went 28:31 into overtime, when Pat LaFontaine gave Verdun a 5-4 win over Longueuil on April 22, 1983. The lone assist on the goal came from current Sea Dogs Head Coach Gerard Gallant.

It was also the longest game in the six-year history of the Sea Dogs franchise.

GARBAGE ON ICE
We hate using the “class” card, but the Olympiques faithful didn’t show much “class” when they littered the ice with junk following Ryan Tesink’s overtime goal. The anger was, apparently, towards the non-call that allowed the puck to be turned over.

A bunch of people in attendance tweeted that a horn was tossed at Jonathan Huberdeau.

There was also a fan in orange shirt who kept getting up to yell stuff all stuff. No clue what he was doing.

PHILLIPS HURT
Zack Phillips was hurt in last night’s game and missed the third period and both overtimes. According to some tweets, he was standing in the Sea Dogs tunnel behind the bench icing his shoulder.

From NHL.com:

Phillips, who has nine goals in the playoffs, did suffer an upper-body injury and didn't play in the third period and overtimes. Coach Gerard Gallant admitted after the game that his injury isn't thought to be serious.

Losing Phillips for any serious amount of time would be a huge blow. In 17 playoff games, the draft-eligible center has nine goals and 15 assists while playing alongside Jonathan Huberdeau and Stanislav Galiev.

THE PK
Gatineau had a massive chance to win the match when they were awarded a five-on-three power play 5:12 into the first overtime. But the Sea Dogs went to work and shut down the Olympiques.

"Short-handed one guy is tough enough, but getting the second is even tougher," said Nathan Beaulieu to Yahoo! Sports. "I think that was a big motivational thing for our team. We came back to the room [between overtime periods] and we talked about that and bounced back.

"We took the adversity and ran with it."

Saint John allowed their first power play goal on the road this post-season in the third period.
