SEA DOGS NOTEBOOK

It’s probably safe to say that the Sea Dogs’ flight to Mississauga yesterday was a bit more enjoyable than a bus ride to Rouyn-Noranda. Mathieu Corbeil tweeted a video of the team on the plane.

SEA DOGS PREVIEW
Buzzing The Net is previewing each team that will take part in the Memorial Cup. Yesterday, they released their Sea Dogs preview.

EXPECTATIONS
Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant believes the Sea Dogs are as good as any team playing in the Memorial Cup.

"We're going in thinking we're the best team," said Gallant to the Summerside Journal Pioneer. "We've been No. 1 in Canada most of the year, and we feel real good about our team."

Gallant, along with Mike Kelly, will face fellow Prince Edward Islander Dave Cameron – Mississauga’s head coach – in the opening game of the tournament.

"It's pretty exciting and will be a lot of fun with someone on the other bench you know really well," said Gallant. "The three of us have known each other real well for a long time. It will be two good hockey teams playing."

The Telegraph-Journal reports today that Kelly and Cameron played high school hockey together in PEI.

CAMERON WAS PLAYING WELL
Jason Cameron’s injury came at a bad time. With many Sea Dogs battling injuries in the final round of the playoffs, the fourth line defensive forward probably would have seen more ice time.

"To be honest, the last three games of the final he played before he got hurt, he played real well,” said Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant to the Journal Pioneer. “He had a chance to play a lot. We had no injuries all season long, and he did a real good job for us."

Cameron’s season ended after suffering a bruised kidney injury in Game Four of the final in Gatineau. In 46 games with Saint John during the regular season, the rookie recorded three goals and four assists.

THE ODDS
Halifax Mooseheads play-by-play man John Moore tweeted this this morning:

According to the oddsmakers, Missassauga has a 61% chance of beating Saint John in Fridays Memorial Cup opener.
Whatever.

MR. CLUTCH
Metro Halifax spoke with Stephen MacAulay about his clutch goal scoring in the post-season.

“I like to take care of my own end first and when there are chances, try to bear down and contribute,” said the Cole Harbour native, who buried six goals in Saint John’s final 13 games, second only to top-five NHL draft prospect Jonathan Huberdeau during that stretch.

“Getting those big goals, it feels great. You feel like you’ve done a lot to help the team.”
MacAulay recorded three game winning goals in the playoffs which included two in the semifinals against Lewiston.

PREVIEW SHOW RECAP
If you missed Rogers Sportsnet Memorial Cup preview show last night, you didn’t miss a whole lot. Here is a recap:

  • Rob Faulds announces every French name with a French accent.
  • Jonathan Huberdeau and Simon Despres were named to the “Pete’s Primetime Performers” list.
  • Pierre Durepos was named to Sam’s “Steady Eddie” list.
  • According to Rob Faulds, people in Saint John have some kind of bizarre pronunciation for ‘Huberdeau.’
Every game of the Memorial Cup can be seen live on Rogers Sportsnet.

Here is a brief preview from the Sportsnet broadcast team.

HOFFMAN MOVES ON
Former Sea Dog Mike Hoffman and the Binghamton Senators have advanced to the American Hockey League’s Calder Cup final.

Hoffman and the Baby Sens won the AHL’s Eastern Conference last night with a 4-3 overtime win and completed the sweep of the Charlotte Checkers. Hoffman recorded an assist, was a minus-1, and had three shots.

In 74 regular season games, Hoffman registered seven goals and 18 assists. In 13 playoff games he has one goal and eight helpers.

They will play either the Hamilton Bulldogs or the Houston Aeros in the final. The Bulldogs feature former Sea Dogs goaltender Robert Mayer.
