Plainville in Blainville

The team formally known as the Montreal Junior and formally, formally known as the St. John’s Fog Devils announced their new name today.

At a press conference at Centre d'Excellence Sports Rousseau this morning, it was announced that the Blainville-Boisbriand Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team will be called the ‘Armada.’

According to our boy Nick over at Hockey Points, the name means “force, cohesion, unity, and the pooling of forces....like a fleet of ships entering combat". Armada is also a Nissan car brand.

Along with announcing the team name, they also unveiled their logo and jerseys. Their choice of colour scheme has created quite a bit of discussion around the internet.

The Armada made the bold move of going with a black and white theme making the jerseys look a tad plain. But despite the lack of colour, the logo is nicely designed and the jerseys look very sharp.

Chris from Icethetics, who knows more about hockey jerseys than many of the people who work for Reebok, shared his thoughts on the design.

One thing I will say about this branding is it's definitely not targeting children with bright colors and cartoon creatures. This is an all-out effort to create a professional look for a junior hockey club. I give it a tenuous thumbs-up overall. A solid effort in design but sorely lacking in personality.

As SN's Cameron MacEachern pointed out on Twitter, it may look like a televised game from 1950 if the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles wear their third jerseys against the Armada.

It was announced several weeks ago that the Montreal Junior franchise had been sold and would move to Boisbriand, Quebec for the upcoming season. The Junior entered the league as the St. John’s Fog Devils in 2005 as an expansion team. They spent three seasons on ‘The Rock’ before moving to Verdun where they played for three more seasons.

The Saint John Sea Dogs travel to Boisbriand to play the Armada on Wednesday, September 28. They make their only regular season Harbour Station appearance on Sunday, January 29.
