Galiev Speaks About Lokomotiv Tragedy

The hockey community is in mourning this afternoon as details continue to trickle out about the tragic plane crash involving the Kontinental Hockey League’s Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.

Saint John Sea Dogs Russian forward Stanislav Galiev, who skated this morning at the Washington Capitals practice facility, talked to the Washington Times about the crash.

“I am shocked. It's very sad,” Galiev said. “I had a couple good friends there from world junior team – I played with them.”

The Times reports that Galiev knew three players on Lokomotiv: Yuri Urychev, Daniil Sobchenko and Sergei Ostapchuk.

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has posted a release stating that Ostapchuk and Gennady Churilov were the only Q-league players onboard involved in the crash.

"I am extremely saddened by this terrible news," said Commissioner Gilles Courteau. "We are still awaiting developments regarding this horrible incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those involved."

Churilov played with the Quebec Remparts in 2004-05, recording 11 goals and 29 assists in 69 games.

Ostapchuk was a member of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in 2008-09 and part of 2009-10. He played 61 games his first year and had 29 goals and 34 assists. The following campaign he played in 38 games, registering 21 markers and 16 helpers.

Current Sea Dog Alexandre Beauregard played for the Huskies during Ostapchuk’s time there.

The Sea Dogs posted on their Facebook page that they will hold a moment of silence prior to tomorrow night’s game against the Moncton Wildcats at Harbour Station to mourn the loss in the hockey community.
