The Last Time The Sea Dogs Were Shutout

If you listened to the radio broadcast of tonight’s 7-0 Saint John Sea Dogs loss in Victoriaville, you are probably aware that the last time the team was shutout was October 13, 2009. If you didn’t listen to the broadcast, well, now you know.

October 13, 2009. That’s almost two years ago. That’s an impressive stretch of not going goalless.

On that Tuesday night in Charlottetown, the Sea Dogs fell 4-0 to the PEI Rocket. Marco Cousineau, who would be traded to Saint John later that season, got the shutout in goal.

Like Saturday’s game in Victoriaville, the loss in PEI was embarrassing.

"It was pretty well an embarrassing performance,'' Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant told the Telegraph-Journal following the loss. "We tried a little harder in the third period, but after getting beat in your own building by P.E.I. 6-1 earlier in the season (Sept. 23) and then getting destroyed again tonight, it's very disappointing.

Luckily for the Sea Dogs, that loss was soon forgotten thanks to the events that followed. Saint John went on to win 22 straight games, finish the year atop the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League standings and eventually lose in six games to the Moncton Wildcats in the President’s Cup final.

Stephen MacAulay, Danick Gauthier, Kevin Gagne, Pierre Durepos, Nathan Beaulieu, Tomas Jurco and Stanislav Galiev all played in both shutout loses. According to the SN pre-game from 2009, Zack Phillips and Scott Oke were both scratched.

To put it all into perspective, the Sea Dogs have played 132 regular season games, 40 playoff games, four Memorial Cup games and have won two regular season titles, a President’s Cup and Memorial Cup Championship between shutout loses. It’s been quite a ride.
