Sea Dogs Notebook

Via Sea Dogs equipment manager David Kelly’s Twitter, the Memorial Cup patches are ready to go for tomorrow night.

HERE WE GO
We are less than 24 hours away from the President’s Cup final kicking off at Harbour Station as the Sea Dogs host the Rimouski Oceanic. Game 1 is Friday at 8pm and Game 2 is Saturday at 7pm. There are still a few tickets available for the matches.

Friday’s game will air nationally on Sportsnet and TVA Sports.

BLUE JACKETS
The Columbus Blue Jackets website has a preview of the President’s Cup final. The QMJHL’s Championship Series features two Jackets prospects in Sea Dogs goaltender Mathieu Corbeil and Oceanic forward Petr Straka. You know Columbus fans are pumped for this series.

CP ARTICLE
The Canadian Press released their annual QMJHL Championship Series preview on Thursday.

“To get where they’re at, they’re playing well,” said Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant about the Oceanic. “When the playoffs started, there were four teams people were picking and it seems they weren’t one of them.

“But they play well as a team. Are they supposed to be in the final? Probably not. But they deserve to be there.”

PRICELESS MOMENTS
The Sea Dogs’ 2011 Memorial Cup victory over the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors is now a MasterCard Memorial Cup Priceless Moment. Sportsnet’s Rob Faulds and Sam Cosentino talk about the victory in a video posted here.

BABINEAU
The Truro Daily News has an article on Oceanic defenseman Casey Babineau.

"For most people this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Babineau told the newspaper. "You want to win no matter what and we're going to do whatever it takes to win because we may never get this chance again."

The article is entitled “seize the day” which means this video must be posted.

DeFULVIIS
Buzzing The Net has an article on Rimouski forward Robbie DeFulviis who has an interesting story. He played a key role on getting the Oceanic to this final, scoring the overtime winner in Game 6 of the semifinals against Hailfax.

"I'm not going to lie, that was probably one of the biggest goals of my life," DeFulviis said. "To score a goal like that to put your team in the league finals is pretty cool but that's the past, we [Rimouski] have to get ready for the Saint John Sea Dogs."

PREDICTIONS
Here’s what Serge Poulin of ProHockeyNews.com had to say about the President’s Cup final.

“The President Cup final promise to be interesting,” writes Poulin. “Even if lots of experts seems to preview Saint John to repeat as QMJHL champion, you can count on Rimouski head coach Serge Beausoleil to try to do everything in his power to fool all experts.

“But at the end, even if the format of the series will be 2-3-2 with first two games in Saint John, Sea Dogs will prevail in six games over the Oceanic.”

LEADERS
Entering Game 1, Charlie Coyle leads the league in playoff scoring with 29 points. Zack Phillips is third with 27, Stanislav Galiev is fourth with 26, and Alexandre Mallet is sixth with 22.

Coyle also leads the league in goals with 14. Fredericton native Peter Trainor leads the Oceanic in goal scoring with 11.

Phillips leads the circuit in assists with 20. Alex Belzile has a Rimouski high 15.

FACTS AND STATS
The QMJHL website has some facts and stats heading into the series. A couple of the bullets include some interesting historical markers for Gerard Gallant.
