POSTSCRIPT: Sea Dogs 2, Mooseheads 11

A collection of recaps from last night’s 11-2 Saint John Sea Dogs blowout loss to the Halifax Mooseheads…

Our recap. The Saint John Sea Dogs traveled to Moose Country on Saturday night for a rematch against the Halifax Mooseheads.

The Chronicle Herald’s recap. Star forwards MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin wowed the crowd with a combined four goals, including two beauties on the rush in the first period from MacKinnon and a breakaway show-stopper from Drouin in the second.

Metro Halifax’s recap. The Mooseheads mopped up the Sea Dogs before a crowd of 8,583 at the Metro Centre, tying a franchise single-game scoring record while turning the tables on a team that has dominated them for the past three seasons.

SaintJohnSeaDogs.com’s recap. Sebastien Auger made 8 saves on 12 shots in the first 20 minutes before giving way to Alex Fournier who made 18 saves on 25 shots in his Sea Dogs debut.

MISSING IN ACTION: Forwards Mackenzie Brown (knee), Spencer Smallman (shoulder), Matthew Highmore (shoulder), and Stephen MacAulay (AHL Camp) along with defensemen Pierre Durepos (hip), David Weckworth (knees), and Kevin Gagne (AHL Camp) did not play for Saint John.

REMATCH: Well, all the animosity that started after the final horn on Friday certainly didn’t carry over into this game. The Mooseheads and Sea Dogs stayed away from the rough stuff as Halifax steamrolled Saint John. The Moose improved to 2-0 against Saint John on the year. They don’t meet again until December which might be a good thing if you enjoy watching close hockey games.

FIRST: Well, the first period couldn’t have gone much worse. Halifax led 4-0 after one and outshot Saint John 12-4. The Moose scored twice on the power play, once while shorthanded and once at even strength.

AUGER: Although he couldn’t do much with the goals he allowed, Sebastien Auger got the hook for the first time this season. He allowed four goals on 12 shots in the opening frame.

Auger was replaced by Alex Fournier to start the second. Fournier’s QMJHL debut didn’t go so well as he allowed seven goals on 26 shots in relief. Unfortunately for Fournier, he is now the owner of a 10.50 goals against average to go with a 0.731 save percentage.

FRK: Martin Frk was tossed and will receive an automatic one-game suspension for a slew footing penalty he took in the first period. The Sea Dogs got a five-minute power play but couldn’t get much going. Nathan MacKinnon scored while shorthanded during the span, making it 3-0 Moose.

SHOTS: Just how bad was it? If Saint John had scored on every one of their shots on goal through two periods, the teams would have gone into second intermission tied at 7-7. The Sea Dogs were outshot 38-17 overall after they managed to get 10 shots on Zach Fucale in the third.

HUBERDEAU: Jonathan Huberdeau was the only Sea Dog who could get much going offensively for Saint John on Saturday. Huberdeau made it seven straight games with a point and six straight games with a goal thanks to his two-goal performance. Huberdeau now has eight markers on the season.

DUDA: Defenseman Steven Duda, who made his Sea Dogs debut on Friday night at Harbour Station, recorded his first QMJHL point. He assisted on Huberdeau’s first goal just 20 seconds into the third period. He also registered three shots and a -2 rating on the night.

BIG THREE: Halifax’s big three came to play on Saturday night. Goaltender Zach Fucale made 15 saves in the win, Nathan MacKinnon scored three goals and added an assist, and Jonathan Drouin recorded a goal and two helpers. MacKinnon was a +5 and Drouin a +4.

Drouin did not finish the game after leaving in the second period with an upper body injury. Mooseheads general manager Cam Russell told Metro Halifax that the injury is "not serious."

SHORTHANDED: With Nathan MacKinnon’s shorthanded goal in the first period, the Mooseheads have now recorded six shorthanded goals in seven games. Wow.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Despite the score, the Mooseheads only scored two of their 11 goals on the man advantage. They were awarded three power play opportunities. Saint John went 1-for-4 on the power play.

GOALS AGAINST: Entering last night’s game, the Sea Dogs had given up just 13 goals all season and had scored 19. After last night’s debacle, they now sport a -3 goal differential having been outscored 24-21 by opponents.

NOTES: Steven Duda had a Sea Dogs high three shots… Jason Seed had three hits… Benjamin Hade was a -6… Olivier Leblanc was the only Saint John player without a minus rating… Nathan MacKinnon and Luca Ciampini each had three goals… Konrad Abeltshauser had four assists… MacKinnon was a team best +5… Trey Lewis had four hits… the Mooseheads tied their franchise record for goals in a game… it’s been some time since the Sea Dogs got destroyed like this. They did lose a game 7-0 last year… the Sea Dogs have allowed 12 goals in a game twice, which is the team record for goals against in one game.
