POSTSCRIPT: Sea Dogs 1, Oceanic 9

The Canadian Press’ recap. Anthony DeLuca, Peter Trainor and Alexandre Lavoie combined for eight goals and 15 points as the Oceanic (27-11-5) crushed Saint John (18-22-0) to improve to 8-1-1 in their last 10 games.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without Matthew Highmore (death in family), Jurij Repe (broken hand), David Weckworth (lower body), Connor Donaghey (healthy), and Jonathan Huberdeau (Florida Panthers camp) on Friday night.

VILLEMAIRE: Maxime Villemaire picked up right where he left off last season. The 20-year old who returned to the Saint John lineup last night after spending the first half in the professional ranks, fought Lucas Grundy just 2:20 into the game. Villemaire finished the game with nine penalty minutes.

SAAB: Ian Saab also made his season debut after spending the first half in Austria. He was a -1 and had one hit.

MALONE: Brett Malone made his Sea Dogs debut after being acquired in a trade earlier this week. He scored Saint John’s only goal in the game, his fourth of the season. He had one shot in the contest and went 2-for-3 in faceoffs.

FIRST PERIOD: Rimouski dominated the first period. They led 4-0 after one and out shot Saint John 14-3. The Dogs couldn’t create any good scoring chances. Fredericton native Peter Trainor had two goals, an assist, and four shots in the opening frame.

SHOTS: Things didn’t get a whole lot better in the second period for Saint John as Rimouski scored twice and out shot the Dogs 13-7 to lead 6-1 after 40 minutes. Shots were 42-16 overall in the game. Saint John had just three dangerous shots.

TRAINOR: What a night for Peter Trainor. The Fredericton native recorded a hat trick before the game was even half over. He finished the night with four goals, two assists, six shots, and a +2 rating. He was a beast.

LAVOIE: Alexandre Lavoie made a good first impression with his new team. The former Cape Breton Screaming Eagle registered three goals and added three assists in his first game with Rimouski. Not a bad start.

GAGNE: Kevin Gagne, the long-time Sea Dogs defenseman who was traded to the Oceanic last month, had three assists last night to go along with five shots and a +2 rating. He now has two goals and seven assists in six games with Rimouski.

GRAVEL: Former Sea Dogs draft pick Maxime Gravel had two assists in this game. He now has four goals and 15 assists in 42 games with the Oceanic this season.

FOURNIER: Sebastien Auger was pulled after two periods after allowing six goals on 27 shots. Alex Fournier took over in the third and allowed three goals on 15 shots. It was his first game action since December 16 in PEI. He now has a 7.07 GAA and 0.809 SV%.

ROAD: Last night’s loss dropped the Sea Dogs to 9-10-0-0 on the road this year. They’ve been outscored 87-62 in 19 road contests.

STANDINGS: The Sea Dogs slid to 15^th overall in the league standings with an 18-22-0-0 record. They are eight points up on the 16^th-place Sherbrooke Phoenix and one-point back of the 15^th-place Gatineau Olympiques.

NOTES: This was the first time the Sea Dogs played in Rimouski since winning the President’s Cup there last year… former Sea Dog Scott Oke did not play… Sea Dogs head coach and general manager Mike Kelly was away scouting again. Assistant coach Ross Yates ran the bench… Pierre Durepos, Ian Saab, and Jason Cameron each wore an ‘A’ on their sweater. Durepos took part in the ceremonial faceoff… defenseman Jeremy Doucet recorded his first point as a Sea Dog on Brett Malone’s goal… Jakub Izacky had a Saint John high three shots.
