POSTSCRIPT: Wildcats 2, Sea Dogs 4

A collection of recaps from last night’s 4-2 Saint John Sea Dogs win over the Moncton Wildcats…

Our recap. It was game two of a three game weekend for the Saint John Sea Dogs as they set their sights on long-time rivals the Moncton Wildcats. The two teams battled it out at Harbour Station on Friday evening.

The Canadian Press’ recap. Sebastien Auger stopped 44-of-46 shots and Connor Donaghey's second-career QMJHL goal stood up as the winner as the Sea Dogs (21-33-1) doubled up Moncton (34-19-1) for just their second win in their last 11 games.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without Matthew Highmore (lower body), Spencer Smallman (flu), David Weckworth (knee), and Michael Abbott (healthy/day off) on Friday night.

FIGHT: Heavy weight fight between Justin Dickinson and Kyle Haas at 1:56 of the first. Both players were throwing bombs before Dickinson threw down Haas. Probably the best Sea Dog fight of the season.

FIRST GOAL: Saint John’s first goal was unique. Jakub Izacky scored at 5:01 during a five-on-three power play but it wasn’t clear if the puck had gone in or not so play continued. A few seconds later, Jurij Repe scored with a low shot. The play was reviewed and Izacky’s goal counted. Time was put back on the clock before play continued.

ZILBERT: Noah Zilbert seems to enjoy playing against Moncton. The rookie forward scored his eighth goal of the year 10:12 of the first, giving the Sea Dogs a 2-1 lead. Of Zilbert’s eight goals, four have been against Moncton.

DICKINSON: Justin Dickinson picked up his first QMJHL point in the second period, recording an assist on Connor Donaghey’s goal. Dickinson was playing in his 17^th game with Saint John.

DUDA: Steven Duda picked up an assist on Maxime Villemaire’s second period goal. It was the defenseman’s first point since January 11. He has six assists in 43 games.

AUGER: Sebastien Auger was unreal as he usually is. He made 44 saves in the win which included several terrific stops. Auger improved to 20-25-1-0 on the season with a 3.31 goals against average and a 0.905 save percentage.

Auger has played the most minutes and made the most saves of any goaltender in the league this season.

HOLOWENKO: Wildcats backup Cole Holowenko got the start on Friday but was pulled early in the second after Connor Donaghey scored a goal that just barely crossed the line. He allowed three goals on 11 shots. Alex Dubeau took over and allowed a goal on 13 shots in relief.

NARBONNE: Jonathan Narbonne was booed by the Saint John crowd every time he touched the puck. The last time Moncton was in town, Narbonne appeared to be seriously injury after getting kneed by Oliver Cooper. Cooper was tossed and Narbonne returned moments later. Sea Dogs fans haven’t forgot.

VS WILDCATS: This victory means Saint John wins the season series between the Dogs and ‘Cats. Saint John improved to 5-2-0-0 against Moncton while Wildcats fell to 2-4-1-0 against the Sea Dogs. They meet one more time on March 13 in Moncton.

RIVALRY CUP: With a regulation win and a crowd over 4,000, the Sea Dogs picked up four Rivalry Cup points. Saint John now leads the challenge 17-13 with one game left.

STANDINGS: The Sea Dogs improved to 21-33-1-0 on the season but remain fifth in the Telus Maritimes Division and 15^th overall in the league. They are now seven points ahead of the Sherbrooke Phoenix.

NOTES: It was Hawaiian Night at Harbour Station… Allain Saulnier had two assists… Ivan Barbashev had eight shots… Ryan Penny had three hits… Jeremy Doucet, who took Michael Abbott’s spot in the lineup, was a team best +3… Maxime Villemaire had six shots… crowd was into this game.
