POSTSCRIPT: Sea Dogs 5, Rocket 8

A collection of recaps from yesterday’s 8-5 Saint John Sea Dogs loss to the PEI Rocket…

Our recap. One of the craziest games of the Saint John Sea Dogs’ season took place on the final day of the regular season.

The Saint John Sea Dogs will open their best-of-seven playoff season against the powerhouse Halifax Mooseheads Friday night in the Nova Scotia capital after finishing the regular season on a losing note, falling 8-5 to the P.E.I. Rocket at the Civic Centre in Charlottetown on Sunday afternoon.

The Guardian’s recap. Even the players thought the P.E.I Rocket’s 8-5 win over the Saint John Sea Dogs on Sunday at the Civic Centre was a weird game.

The Canadian Press’ recap. Ben Duffy had a goal and four assists, which gives him the QMJHL scoring title with 110 points, and Josh Currie scored three times as P.E.I. (41-23-4) downed Saint John (23-44-1) to head into the post season on a six-game win streak.

SaintJohnSeaDogs.com’s recap. The Saint John Sea Dogs couldn’t hold the lead over the PEI Rocket, dropping an 8-5 decision to the Rocket in the final day of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League regular season.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without defensemen Ian Saab (lower body injury according to News 88.9) and Michael Abbott (healthy) along with forward Connor Donaghey (healthy) on Sunday afternoon.

Jason Cameron returned to the Saint John lineup after missing Friday’s game in Halifax with a minor lower body injury.

PRE-GAME: The Rocket honoured their three 20-year old players before the game – Alex Micallef, Josh Currie, and Ben Duffy.

CAMERON: Jason Cameron finished off a great passing play at 14:56 of the first, tying the game at 1-1 at the time. Assists went to Marcus Cuomo and Jakub Izacky. It was Cameron’s third of the year.

IZACKY: After tumbling on the ice during warm-up, Jakub Izacky had a good opening period of hockey by helping set up Jason Cameron’s goal and then scoring his own on a power play at 19:32. It was Izacky’s first goal since March 6, also against PEI. He had six shots in the game and was a +1.

PEPIN: Alexis Pepin had a solid rookie season in the QMJHL. The 2012 second overall pick scored his 18th of the year and third in two games in the first period on Sunday. He also had four shots and was a +2 yesterday.

WILD SECOND: What wild period the second period was yesterday. Tied at 2-2 entering the frame, the Rocket grabbed a 4-2 lead before Saint John scored three times to lead 5-4 after two. Shots were 20-13 in favour of the Sea Dogs. There was also two minutes of three-on-three play and three minutes of five-on-three pay bizarre.

FINAL GAME: 20-year olds Maxime Villemaire and Pierre Durepos each played their final regular season game yesterday. Villemaire had a goal and an assist while Durepos had a goal and two assists.

FOURNIER: Goaltender Alex Fournier made 38 saves yesterday but could not get the win. He finishes the season with a 1-13 record to go along with a 5.52 GAA and 0.856 SV%. He left the game with just over three minutes to go in the third with an injury. From News 88.9’s recap:

Fournier had to leave the game with just over three minutes left in the third after a long shot from Currie hit him in the mask, followed quickly by a Rocket stick.

Fournier also picked up a tripping penalty in the third period, a penalty Josh Currie would score on. It was the first penalty of his QMJHL career.

POINT LEADERS: With a goal and four assists yesterday, Ben Duffy won the league’s scoring title with 110 points. He beat out Halifax’s Jonathan Drouin who finished with 105 points.

Duffy’s teammate, Josh Currie, had a hat trick yesterday to give him 104 points and finish third in the league’s scoring race. He finished with 49 goals on the year.

VS ROCKET: The Rocket easily won the season series, going 7-0-1-0 against the Sea Dogs. Saint John went 1-7-0-0 against PEI.

STANDINGS: With the loss, Saint John finishes the regular season with a 23-44-1-0 record, placing them fifth in the Telus Maritimes Division and 16th overall. They grabbed the final playoff spot, finishing 10 points ahead of the 17th-place Shawinigan Cataractes.

STREAKS: Saint John enters the playoffs on a four-game losing streak. PEI enters on a six-game winning streak.

LAST GAME: This was the last regular season game for the team known as the “PEI Rocket.” They’ll be renamed the “PEI Islanders” for next season.

NOTES: Yesterday was St. Patrick’s Day. True story… PEI will play the Val-d’Or Foreurs in the first-round… Maxime Villemaire left the game in the first after taking a shot in the arm area. He would return… David Weckworth was a -4… Jakub Izacky and Jurij Repe were each a +1… Izacky and Villemaire each had six shots… Jeremy Doucet had three hits… Matej Beran had three assists… Troy Vance and Ben Duffy were each a +4… Josh Currie had 12 shots. He really wanted that 50th… Alex Micallef had six hits… Saint John won 44 of 76 shots… the Rocket averaged 1,805 fans per game this season, the third worst average in the league… Telus camera operator was asleep so there is no video of Jack Nevins or Patrick McGrath incident.

NEXT GAME: The Sea Dogs will face the Halifax Mooseheads in the first-round of the President’s Cup playoffs. The first game is this Friday at the Metro Centre.
