There was a significant upset in Atlantic University Sport playoff action last night as the Saint Mary’s Huskies eliminated the
University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds in the semi-finals.
The Huskies, who were seeded fifth in the AUS,
finished off the Varsity Reds, ranked No. 2 in the country, in four games
(best-of-five series) with a 1-0 victory at the Halifax Forum last night.
It was a frustrating series from a UNB standpoint. SMU goaltender
Anthony Peters was unreal and the Huskies defense did a good job at shutting
done the Reds. Saint Mary’s also won games one and three in double overtime.
Former Sea Dogs forward Stephen MacAulay played a key
role in SMU’s series win over UNB and their first-round victory over UPEI. In
seven playoff games MacAulay has five goals and three assists which is good for third in league scoring. He spoke with John Moore after the game.
The Huskies will now take on the Acadia Axemen in the AUS
Final with the winner moving on to CIS Nationals in Saskatoon. The Axemen are
equally as good as the Varsity Reds and finished just behind them in the
regular season standings.
While SMU ended Mike Thomas’ season, the Axemen advanced
by eliminating Pierre Durepos, Danny Chiasson, and the Universite de Moncton
Aigles Bleus in four games.
