The Sea Dogs have traded forward Joey Richard to the
Gatineau Olympiques. The Olympiques’ website doesn’t say what the Dogs will be
getting in return, but Jean-Francois Plante of Le Droit tweets Saint John will
be getting a 2016 fourth-round pick.
Richard was a third-round selection of the Sea Dogs in
the 2013 QMJHL Entry Draft. The Dieppe native recorded three goals and two
assists in 25 games. He hasn’t played since January 4 due to a dislocated shoulder that caused him to miss the remainder of the 2013-14 season.
The 17-year old tore up the NB/PEI Major Midget AAA Hockey
League before coming to Saint John. In 2012-13 with the Moncton Flyers, the right winger registered 55
points in 35 regular season games and added another 30 points in just nine
post-season matches.
Looking at next year’s roster, there didn’t seem to be a
whole lot of room for Richard. But at the same time, this deal is a bit
surprising given that Richard hasn’t had much time yet to adjust to the Q and show what he can do at this level. Hopefully this deal doesn’t backfire.
The QMJHL’s trading period opens on May 30. The Q site
will be probably crash when inputting all of Saint John’s deals.
