Trading Period Comes To A Close

The QMJHL’s trade deadline has come and gone and, not surprisingly, the Saint John Sea Dogs had a fairly quiet day.

Saint John’s only move today was a depth move, acquiring 18-year-old defenseman Gabriel Bettez from the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in exchange for a 10th-round pick in the 2017 QMJHL Entry Draft.

Other than acquiring Matt Murphy from Quebec before the trading period officially opened, it’s been a fairly quiet few weeks in Saint John. The Dogs shipped out Julien Tessier, Jason Bell and Dawson Theede in exchange for draft picks in their only other moves of the trade period.

So the Sea Dogs’ current roster is what the team will be moving forward with – and we really haven’t seen that full roster. Due to injuries, suspensions and international tournaments, Saint John has been shorthanded for much of the season. But they’ve quietly put together a respectable first half and could certainly move up in the standings with the likes of Thomas Chabot, Jakub Zboril, Bokondji Imama, Matt Green and Samuel Dove-McFalls returning at some point.

The biggest move of the day saw the Halifax Mooseheads trade captain Timo Meier to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in exchange for draft picks. Also, Dmytro Timashov is officially a member of the Shawinigan Cataractes. The full list of trades can be found on the QMJHL website.

The only former Sea Dog to moved today was Joey Richard. The 19-year-old winger was traded by the Gatineau Olympiques to the Moncton Wildcats in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2017. Richard has been plagued by injuries throughout his career and has three goals and seven assists in 21 games this year.

Saint John’s next game is on Saturday night in Bathurst.
