RECAP: Sea Dogs Lose 6-2

FINAL: Saint John 2, Cape Breton 6
By Kevin Chambers | SN Staff

SYDNEY, NS - The Maritimes Division champion Saint John Sea Dogs may have suffered a few loses tonight.

The end result wasn’t what the Sea Dogs were looking for, dropping a 6-2 contest to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles at Centre 200. Likely the bigger concern though is the health of defensemen Luke Green and Thomas Chabot moving forward.

Early in the contest, Green was shoved from behind and hit the boards, causing him to leave the game with an upper body injury (appeared to be favouring his shoulder).
Later in the opening period, Chabot blocked and joined Green in the dressing room.

As for the game, Michael Joly struck early in the second period to give the Screaming Eagles a 1-0 lead just 1:46 in. Later in the frame, Spencer Smallman and Jordan Ty Fournier had a spirited tilt with both landing some big shots before knocking each other’s helmet off. Alexandre Gosselin would give the Screaming Eagles a 2-0 lead when he sent a seeing eye wrist shot on net that eluded Marc-Antoine Turcotte at 9:12. Joly would strike again for the Eagles when he and Dubois broke in with a two-on-one opportunity to make it 3-0 at 11:18. Just a short time later at 12:17, Cape Breton struke again with Gosselin picking up his second of the contest, blowing one past Turcotte to up the score to 4-0.

Dubois struck early in the third period with a power play marker just 46 seconds in, beating Alex Bishop - who took over between the pipes for Saint John – to extend the home sides lead to 5-0. Saint John would get on the board with a power play marker from Sam Povorozniouk at 1:59, netting his 39th goal of the season to ruin the shutout bid for Alexandre Belanger. Dubois would notch another man advantage marker at the 10:56 mark to extend Cape Breton’s lead to 6-1. The Sea Dogs would get the final goal of the night when Jordan King made it a 6-2 contest just 16 seconds after Dubois’ marker. That would be as close as the game would get though.

NOTES
  • Scratches for the Sea Dogs were Mathieu Joseph (upper body), Matthew Highmore (lower body), Adam Marsh (upper body), Bailey Webster (upper body), Alexandre Bernier (upper body) and Kallum Muirhead (healthy).
  • The Screaming Eagles sported their green St. Patrick’s Day jerseys for this one.
  • Thomas Chabot and Luke Green were both injured in this game. Green’s injury appeared to be shoulder related while Chabot’s injury came from blocking a shot somewhere in the lower body. Chabot only returned briefly while Green did not return at all.
  • Kyle Ward spent some time on defense, a position he played some in midget. Samuel Dove-McFalls also took a shift playing defense in the third period.
  • Recent call up Jordan King scored his first goal of the season and first as a Sea Dog.
  • Oliver Felixson took a faceoff. He lost it cleanly, but still.
  • Cape Breton has now won six straight games. The Sea Dogs are just 5-3-2-0 in their last 10.

TURNING POINT
Already up 1-0, the Screaming Eagles scored three goals in a 3:05 span to blow the game open and push their lead to 4-0 at that point. There was no looking back.

SN THREE STARS
