RECAP: Sea Dogs go winless in Hub City

MONCTON - The Saint John Sea Dogs finished the inaugural Hub City Showcase with a 7-2 loss to the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Sunday.

The loss means the Sea Dogs leave the rookie tournament with a 0-3 record, placing them in last place.

Nick Fewer and Olivier Mathieu scored Saint John's only goals on Sunday in Moncton. Alex D'Orio was pulled after allowing four goals on 13 shots. He was replaced by Matthew Williams who allowed three goals on 21 shots.

The Titan had a hat trick from Aaron Brisebois and singles from Keegan Gauthier, Daniil Sokolka, William Lemay-Champagne and Kynan Berger. Max Walford made 21 saves in the win.

The Sea Dogs will no doubt be disappointed about going winless at this tournament. Fortunately, it was just a rookie tournament in August.

Gauthier opened the scoring just 1:21 into the first period to quickly put the Titan ahead. Then at 14:26, Sokolka put in a rebound to give Bathurst a 2-0 advantage.

Saint John got on the board at 18:12 when Fewer beat Walford, making it a 2-1 game after one period.

Just 1:03 into the second, Brisebois scored a nice goal, beating Alex D'Orio upstairs to restore Bathurst's two-goal lead. The Titan then took a 4-1 lead at 7:48 when Lemay-Champagne scored, a goal that would end D'Orio's day in net.

On a power play at 10:27, Mathieu scored his second of the pre-season, putting a rebound past Walford to make it 4-2.

At 4:26 of the third, Brisebois sped past the Saint John defence and beat Williams with a wrist shot, giving the Titan a 5-2 advantage. Berger and Brisebois added further in insurance in the third, making it a 7-2 final.

NOTES: There were no penalties in the first period... the first penalties of the game came when Gauthier and Jonathan Mason dropped the gloves in the second period. Mason was given a game misconduct for removing Gauthier's helmet... Mark Kennedy and Nicholas Beauchamp fought in the third period... both teams went 1-for-2 on the power play.

NEXT GAME: The Sea Dogs are in Bathurst on Wednesday to take on the Titan in a pre-season game at 7 p.m.
