RECAP: Sea Dogs lose 4-3

FINAL: Drummondville 4, Saint John 3
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs' inability to score on the power play proved costly on Wednesday night.

The Sea Dogs went 0/6 on the man advantage in a 4-3 loss to the Drummondville Voltigeurs at Harbour Station.

Saint John looked good at times but bad at other points. The team displayed some good offensive jump at points during the contest, but made a few costly defensive errors in this loss.

Joe Veleno netted a pair of goals and added an assist while Ostap Safin chipped in with one helper. Alex D'Orio made 23 saves in the loss.

Connor Bramwell, Cedric Desruisseaux, Robert Lynch and Nicolas Guay scored for Drummondville. Olivier Rodrigue made 26 saves in the win.

The Voltigeurs opened the scoring at 3:50 of the first period while on a power play. A low Nicolas Beaudin shot from near the side boards was redirected by Bramwell and past D'Orio, making it 1-0 Drummondville.

The Sea Dogs tied things up at 1-1 at 6:39. Veleno came flying down the wing and wired a wrist shot top corner on Rodrigue.

Saint John then took the lead at 10:15. Rodrigue stopped the initial Veleno chance but Safin was on the doorstep and swept in the rebound, giving the Dogs a 2-1 advantage.

The Sea Dogs opened the second with over three minutes of power play time, but it was Drummondville that got the better of the scoring chances. Finally, at 4:09, Desruisseaux one timed a shot past D'Orio while at even strength, making it a 2-2 contest.

Drummondville then took the lead at 6:07. Lynch tried to fire a pass into the slot but the puck went off Radim Salda's stick and in, making it 3-2 Voltigeurs.

Saint John tied things up again at 9:29. Safin came down the wing and centred the puck for Veleno who had an open net to make it a 3-3 game. But just 12 seconds later, Guay beat D'Orio upstairs with a nice wrist shot to put Drummondville back in front, 4-3.

Saint John had more power play time late in the second - including a 1:11 five-on-three advantage - but could not convert.

There wasn't much offence on display in the third period. The Voltigeurs had a 33 second five-on-three power play late in the frame but could not connect.

Cole Reginato returned from a six-game suspension... Saint John went back to a more normal lineup of 12 forwards and six defencemen... Alex D'Orio made his second straight start after returning from injury on Sunday... defenceman Brendan Sibley recorded his first QMJHL point, assisting on Ostap Safin's first period goal... this was Veleno's first multi-goal game of the season...Veleno looked pretty fired up in this game, especially in the first. It's always interesting to watch how players perform following world junior roster moves.
