FINAL: Sea Dogs lose 5-3

CHARLOTTETOWN, PE - The Saint John Sea Dogs dropped a close one on Sunday in Charlottetown, falling 5-3 to the Islanders.

The loss extends Saint John's overall losing streak to seven games. The team has also lost 12 straight on the road.

Nikita Alexandrov, Cayse Ton, Brett Budgell, Thomas Casey and Daniel Hardie scored for Charlottetown. Matthew Welsh made 16 saves in the win.

Radim Salda, William Poirier and Cole Reginato scored for Saint John. Alex D'Orio made 43 stops in the loss.

Sam King scored near the midway mark of the first period, but the goal was immediately waved off. King clearly redirected the high point shot past D'Orio. Play quickly resumed with no review.

Alexandrov quickly scored a good goal to give Charlottetown a 1-0 lead. The forward sped into the zone, skated into the circle and wired a high wrist shot past D'Orio at 10:47.

Salda tied the game at 16:20, coming out of the box, crossing the line and ripping a wrist shot past Welsh to the tie the game up at 1-1.

Ton gave Charlottetown a 2-1 lead at 8:01 of the second. Thomas Casey sent a cross crease feed to Ton who beat a stretched out D'Orio, putting the Islanders back in front.

Budgell gave Charlottetown a 3-1 lead at 16:24, spinning around and firing a backhand shot under D'Orio while falling down.

Poirier got Saint John back within one at 17:48, firing a wrist shot past the blocker of the Welsh.

Reginato scored at 1:56 of third to tie things up at 3-3. On a two-on-one, Reginato held the puck and never passed, firing a wrist shot past Welsh.

Charlottetown went back in front at 10:05. After a Ton shot on net was deflected off Bailey Webster, the puck went to Casey who put it into an open net.

With D'Orio pulled, Hardie hit the empty net with one minute remaining, making it a 5-3 game.

The Sea Dogs were without forwards Yohan Plamondon (upper body), Matt Green (upper body), Landon Quinney (upper body) and Nicholas Deakin-Poot (upper body); and defencemen Brendan O’Reilly (lower body).

NOTES
Cedric Pare returned to the Sea Dogs' lineup after missing the past five games with an upper body injury. Defenceman Brendan Sibley also returned from injury... Saint John dressed 18 skaters in a game for the first time in, well, forever... Pare was injured in the second period. He would return after a brief absence... the Sea Dogs and Islanders meet one more time this season, battling it out again on March 7 at Harbour Station... Nikita Alexandrov now has four goals against Saint John this season... PEI native Bailey Webster was named the match's third star in what was his final game on the Island.

The Sea Dogs take on the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on the road on Friday night.
