University Cup begins today

FREDERICTON - The University Cup begins today at UNB's Fredericton campus.

Eight teams will be competing for the U Sports national men's hockey championship. Quarterfinal action takes place today and Friday; the semifinals are on Saturday; and the bronze and gold medal games take place on Sunday.

Saturday's semifinals and Sunday's final will be broadcast nationally on Sportsnet 360.

Several former Sea Dogs will be taking part in the tournament again this year - and all of them will be in action today. Here's who will be playing:

Scott Oke - Concordia Stingers
Marc-Antoine Turcotte - Concordia Stingers
Marcus Cuomo - StFX X-Men
Mark Tremaine - StFX X-Men
Mike Thomas - UNB Varsity Reds
Stephen Anderson - UNB Varsity Reds
Matt Murphy - UNB Varsity Reds
Olivier LeBlanc - UNB Varsity Reds
Oliver Cooper - UNB Varsity Reds

Today's games feature the No. 4 Brock Badgers taking on the No. 5 StFX X-Men at 1 p.m. The 7 p.m. contest will see the host and No. 1 seeded UNB Varsity Reds take on the No. 8 Concordia Stingers. Friday's quarterfinals will feature the Alberta Golden Bears (2) taking on the Acadia Axemen (7) at 1 p.m. and the McGill Redmen (3) facing the Saskatchewan Huskies (6) at 7 p.m.

UNB is considered the favourite - but not my a whole lot. The Golden Bears are always good, and the X-Men - who are seeded low because they didn't win their conference - are certainly contenders as well.

The Varsity Reds, who feature a ridiculous (in a good way) five former Sea Dogs, will be looking to win their third straight University Cup championship.
